Fluency Strategies – 5th Grade Fine Arts
1.
Strategy #1
As
part of the arts activities, the students could perform “Readers’ Theaters”
where they are videotaped. Upon
viewing the tape, the students check
their dramatic interpretations as well as
their reading speed,
pronunciation, and intonation.
2.
Strategy #2
During music instruction, students can work on the speed aspect of fluency by doing a choral reading to appropriately paced music. Very fast or very slow music can also be used as a humorous way to show incorrect speed.
3.
Strategy #3
Fluency
can be demonstrated by having the students read a passage, perhaps from an
up-coming play, in a monotone without any punctuation whatsoever. Students can then react to what they
understood from the passage. This point
can be further demonstrated by seeing the students’ reactions to a dance with
only one repetitive step or a picture of all one solid color. With these
examples, students can understand that movement and meaning are important in
both the arts and in language.
