Annotation: This book has fun activities that make you look at math in a different way.

5th Grade

Title: Shape up!

Author: David A. Alder

Annotation: Through this book studentsŐ will learn as they participate and interact with activities. This book helps students with shapes and geometry while their mind develops new qualities. 

Title: Sir Cumference and the Great Knight of Anyelana: a math adventure

Author: Cindy Neushwander

Annotation: This book helps students to learn to use a protractor through a fictional story of a young prince trying to reach his knighthood by rescuing a king.

Title: Math for Every Kid

Author: Janice VanCleave

Annotation: This book from the Science of Every Kid series introduces concepts in geometry through short explanations and hands-on activities.  From recognition of lines, shapes, patterns, and angles. It provides teachers and motivated students with simple projects for exploring facts of geometry.

 

6th Grade

Title: The number Devil

Annotation: A young boy named Robert enters a magical land of number tricks with the number devil.  They use all kinds of numbers, and teach fun ways of remembering vocabulary words.

 Title: Math Trek: Adventures in the math zone

Author: Ivars Peterson & Nancy Henderson

Annotation:  This book has lots of Math problems, puzzles, and pictures to help students apply Math to their lives.   The layout is clear and precise, though some of the explanations are a bit complicated. While Math Trek is perfect for youngsters who want to experiment and learn more on their own, teachers may want to use some of the activities to supplement their curriculum.

Annotation: This book has a fun way to learn Math through puzzles, tricks, and word problems.
