4 Authentic Writing Assignments

1. Poem about their Favorite State- Let the children choose their own state and write an inventive poem about that state. They may want to use information they know about the state and include that in it as well as the capital and anything else they find interesting about the state.
2. State Song- Each child will decide on a state that they wish to research and then they will take the information that they have learned and write a new state song for that state they have researched.
3. Skit about State History- In small groups, the children in the class will write a skit about a state’s history that they have chosen to research. One way to write the skit is to write about the state’s history in becoming a state and writing the skit about that. This skit will be used as an authentic assessment as well.
4. Favorite State- This writing assignment will be where the child takes their favorite state and then they have the option of writing a story, poem, skit, song or rhyme about their state.
