Fluency Lesson #1
After
students create words strips of the broken down words, collect all of the
strips and scatter on a table top at the front of the classroom. Ask groups to create a team name for
themselves and write their team names on the board. Each team will come up and choose a word strip. After the first word strip is selected,
the teacher will turn an hour glass.
Students must complete the word with word strips before the hour glass
runs out, if they do, that team will get two points. If the team cannot complete the word with the word strips,
but they know what the word is, they will receive one point. If the team does not know the word at
all, they receive no points. Keep record
of the each team’s points on the board under their team name.
Fluency Lesson #2
After students have learned about their name – the meaning and origin, assign students to write a one page, typed, double spaced paper on what their name means and where it came from. Have students include a reflection in their paper on what their name means to them personally after learning of its meaning and origins.
