Assessment 1
PURPOSE: To find the student’s writing ability and prior knowledge concerning Language Arts; grammar, spelling, proof reading skills, and their abililty to express themselves. This activity can also be beneficial in learning the student’s interests, home environment, etc.
PRE-ACTIVITY 1:
Before you begin writing, think about what you did this summer. You are going to write a story about your most memorable experience. Be sure to include names of people and places involved. A well written story usually has a beginning, middle, and end using paragraphs to help organize your story. Correct punctuation and capitalization will make your story easier to read. After you have made a plan for your story begin writing. Try to write as long of a story as you can. You will have thirty minutes to think about and write your story. Write the best you can. Show me what you can do.
DAY 1: Each student will write a one to two page paper describing the most memorable thing they did the previous summer. The student will have up to thirty minutes to compose their story. The student will then have five minutes to proof read their own story.
PRE-ACTIVITY 2:
Before you begin proof reading another student’s paper, be sure to check for correct paragraph organization, punctuation, and capitalization. Check for a beginning, middle, and ending to their story. Circle adjectives that make the story interesting. When you are through proof reading, write two or three sentences at the bottom of the pape describing what you liked about the story. Be sure to write: proof read by: and your name, at the bottom of the paper. Do your best, you will be graded on your proof reading participation. Show me what you know.
DAY 2: Students proof read each others’ papers.
SUMMARY: With this information of writing and correcting skills, teachers can determine the strengths and weaknesses of their students. They then can create balanced lesson plans focusing on their students’ needs.
