Alternative Book Report and Comprehension Strategy

Purpose:  This strategy will not only assess the students on what they know about the story we read in class, but it will help the teacher learn how much the student comprehended during their reading.

When to use:  This stategy and assessment should be used when the students are given a novel to read.  Either the teacher chooses the novel or the students’ do.

Description/Procedures:  The students will be asked to read a book.  The students then will read the book and then be given a worksheet upon completion of the book.  The worksheet will look like this but it will be a bigger pyramid.

A)    -----------------------

B)     -----------------------   -----------------------

C)    -----------------------   -----------------------   -----------------------

A)    Pick a character

B)     Name two things that describe that character

C)    Name three things that describe the setting

Comments:  Based upon the answers that the students give will determine if they really read the story or not.  The teacher can have more detailed questions or not.  It is up to them.
