Student Dictionary Ideas

  1. Have your students keep their own dictionary.  Have the students mark each page with the letters of the alphabet starting with A to Z.  Then every time the child misses a spelling word in the final spelling test, it is the child’s is responsible to write the word down in their dictionary under the correct spot.  Also every time a child is not sure on how to spell a word, make them look it up in a Webster’s dictionary and than transfer the word into their own dictionary.  You can also have students write words they didn’t understand when reading in their dictionaries.  This way they are able to have it on hand if they ever need to use these words again.

  1. Separate the dictionary into subjects that are being taught in the classroom.  For example: math, social studies, language art.  Then in the class when you go over important vocabulary or aspects the students should learn and understand. Have them write these in their own dictionaries, in the appropriate place, for their own references.
