Reading Programs at SUU

Graduate Reading Endorsement

Background: The Utah State Department of Education offers a state reading endorsement program through higher education institutions (detailed description of old and new endorsement requirements). This endorsement has been coordinated through the state office and a State Reading Endorsement Committee made up of reading professionals throughout the state. A teacher with elementary certification who completes the program will receive an endorsement indicating specialization in the teaching of reading in grades 1-8. A teacher with secondary certification who completes the program in reading will be qualified to teach reading in grades 6-12.

Basic Competencies

The Utah Reading Endorsement requires seven major areas of competency. NCATE/IRA standards indicate courses must have been taken within the last eight years from the date of application. To see state suggested, sample skeleton guidelines for each course, follow the link USOE guideline. Clicking on the course number and name link will take you to the most recent syllabus used for the course at SUU, if it is active. To return to this page, use your browser's back button. Old course numbers are listed in parentheses. These changes will take effect as of August 15th, 2004 and be reflected in the 2004-2005 catalog and reflect a shift towards the titles used for reading endorsement classes by the Utah State Office of Education.

Southern Utah University Endorsement Connection

To obtain the Reading Endorsement through Southern Utah University:

  • Enter the Graduate School, which is necessary to register for graduate credit at SUU, with the intention of meeting endorsment requirements only or transfer to the Master's Program as desired at a later time.
  • Enroll in those classes or alternatives that meet your needs. The College of Education will offer one of these classes each semester and three in the summer. All of these classes are offered via EDNET. Other classes will be scheduled as needed for cohorts of students.
  • Once you have met the seven competencies, apply to the Utah State Office of Education for your reading endorsement. (Due to the State Reading Endorsement collaboration throughout the state, individuals may take classes and alternative offerings at other institutions as well as SUU to meet endorsement competencies.)
