Reading Minor

A K-12 Reading Minor is offered through the Department of Teacher Education. Students should note that reading courses required for elementary or secondary teacher certification do not count toward a reading minor. A reading minor, within the catalogue for 1998-1999, does lead to state reading endorsement certification if it is completed by the end of the Spring 2001 semester. Contact an advisor (Gina Woods) or elementary reading specialists (Dr. Verlinda Angell or Dr. David Lund) or secondary program director (Dr. Karen Atwood) for more information. Starting with the Fall 2002 semester, reading minor classes are only offered once every two years, so plan accordingly. (Note the change in prefixes from ELED and EDUC to EDRG and that courses are linked to recent syllabi where possible.)

Core Requirements:

Prerequisites: Admittance to Teacher Education and EDRG 3520 - Foundation of Teaching Reading in Elementary Schools

Required Credits: 18 minimum (all classes 3 credit hours)

  • EDRG 4020 - Reading Comprehension
  • EDRG 4030 - Introduction to Process Writing
  • EDRG 4050 - Literacy Difficulties: Prevention and Intervention
  • EDRG 4060 Computer Technology and Literacy
  • And choice of one:
    • EDRG 4120 - Multicultural Literature, LM 3180 - Utilization of Literature in the Classroom
    • or ENG 3010 - Young People's Literature
    • or LM 3180 - Utilization of Children's Literature

Electives - 3 credits from:

  • EDRG 3720 - Content Area Literacy (3 credit hours, elementary majors only)
  • EDRG 3520 - Foundation of Teaching Reading in Elementary Schools (3 credit hours, secondary majors only)
  • EDRG 4251/2/3 ConferencesConferences and Workshops (1,2,3 credit hours respectively)
  • EDRG 4641/2/3 Special Topics in Literacy Studies 1,2,3 credit hours respectively)

Courses meeting old requirements for the undergraduate reading endorsement are: EDUC 3720 or 4020 and 4010, 4030, 4040, 4050, & one of the literature choice classes. Remember, you are only eligible for the undergraduate reading minor if you entered teacher educatio AND completed ELED 3520 or EDUC 3720 prior to May 5, 2000 AND you completed your full reading minor by the end of the Spring 2001 semester.

Finally, starting with the Fall 2001 semester, some of the reading minor classes are now offered via EDNET. This is in an effort to both streamline the program and provide coursework for those people living in outlying areas who wish to pursue an elementary education degree with an emphasis in reading.
