Reading Programs at SUU

Reading/Literacy Instruction at Southern Utah University

Instruction at SUU is designed to prepare two categories of reading professionals:

  1. The Classroom Professional. Preparation of certified or licensed teachers in elementary or secondary classrooms in all disciplines, including general elementary and secondary instruction or a reading minor for future classroom teachers.
  2. The Specialized Reading Professional. Preparation in this category provides specialized instruction for two types of professionals. The graduate reading endorsement provides specialized instruction for currently licensed, practicing teachers who wish to enhance their personal ability to use the principles of reading and literacy in any classroom. These professionals can also serve as a resource to help other teachers enhance classroom practice. The graduate reading specialist certificate provides additional instruction in specific reading programs, allowing the certificate holder to serve in a district or regional capacity as a coordinator of reading programs tailored to the needs of specific schools, districts or regions.

During the past three years SUU has completed the process of obtaining NCATE accreditation, as well as a process of restructuring and reallocating resources and personnel in several programs. As you look at each page regarding specific courses taught, you will note that, where appropriate, current course offerings, as well as, future course offerings are listed.
