Decoding Strategies

Beat/Rhythm= following the music, or staying on count.

Spin/ Turn Around= Keep going to right or left (in one place) until facing forward again.

Leap/ Jump= controlled bounce.

These words can be decoded by demonstrating each word by either clapping the beat/rhythm or you can, as a teacher, show the kids the differences between spin/turn around and leap/jump by getting up and demonstrate the differences.

Far= something in a picture that looks farther away.

Near= something in a picture that looks close.

Note= small pieces of music that make different sounds and last different amounts of time.

Primary Colors= red, yellow, and blue.

Secondary Colors= purple, orange and green

These words can be decoded by getting pictures to show the kids visually what each of the words are. For far and near you can get a picture with an object that is close for near and another picture with an object that is farther away.  For the word Note you can show the kids pictures of the different notes that there are in music.  For the primary and secondary colors you can show the kids pictures of the different colors for each section.

Dance=creative movement which follows a beat.

Play= a performance with costumes and pretend characters.

These words can be decoded by getting two videos, one for dance and one for play. You can show then first the video of dance and then the video of the play and then talk about the differences between them.
