4 Comprehension Strategies

#1

Reciprocal Questioning:  As you read the book, stop at certain points and ask questions for them to think on while continuing on with the book.

#2

Read to first discussion point and discuss:  Read to a proper stopping point and then discuss what has taken place as a review of what has happened.  Then expound on what the students predict to happen next.

#3

Get acquainted with the text:  Each student has individual book access.  Review any vocabulary necessary before beginning the book.

#4

Start reading using title and/or heading:  Read the title/heading and make predictions on what the book may be about.  At the end of the book talk about whether the title/heading was sufficient for the book contents.
