Decoding Strategy
To begin
the teacher will write a list of words on the board including:

Bog
Tick
Snail
Tail
Claw
Jaw
Skies
All of
these words are in the book A Frog in the Bog by Karma Wilson and Joan
Rankin. Read the book to the
students and ask them to listen for those words and begin to think of other
rhyming words. After reading
the story, ask the children what they notice about the words ÒfrogÓ and Òbog.Ó Once they understand that each pair of
words has the same ending, the children can begin to think of other words with
the same endings. Have the
children make a list of their own rhyming words. Once they have their own list, have the write a story using
those words.
