Comprehension Strategies

1.  Questioning

A.  Choose text, either expository or instructional, about another country or culture.

B.   Before reading have students create a list of questions or ideas they already know, or

want to know, or think they know about the subject.

            C.   Have the questions posted and as you read through the text, the students can answer

Or check the questions as a class or in their notebook individually.

D.   This activity helps students activate any prior knowledge and reinforces any new

       Information learned.

2.  Writing

A.   Begin by developing the concept of inferencing.  First hand out some books on Mexico or topic learned then ask students questions like Ò What would we find if we took a trip to MexicoÓ.

B.    Students will activate prior knowledge or use logic from what they find in the books. Ask other questions like Òwhat places we might go to or people

we will come in contact withÓ.

C.    Students will then talk about how they came up with answers

D.   Then the teacher will read a passage from any text that discusses what kind of things and people they would come in contact with in Mexico

E.    Ask the students to respond to the passage and continue the inferencing process.
