Fluency Strategies

1) Have students practice a selected passage of reading. Then have the students read the passage into a tape recorder. Throughout the year, record numerous passages to monitor and graph improvement. Include a tape in each student's file. Use it as a reference for parent-teacher conferences and as a form of assessment.

2) Have the 3rd grade students practice reading a story to
themselves. Then, have a "read-a-loud" by calling on students
to read the next paragraph, page, etc. Finally, invite preschool
or kindergarten age students into your classroom and have your
own students read to them.

3) Have each child in the class choose one book that they want
to become a fluency master. In order to become a fluency master
they need to be able to read the book with clear diction, with
animation in their voice, and feww minor mistakes (preferrably
with no mistakes). Let them take the book home and practice
it with their families and alone, give them time during class
to read aloud to each other their books that they are mastering
and continue this process for a couple of weeks.

Then once the books are checked of with you at a mastery level
have the class go to the Kindergarten class and in small groups
let the third graders read aloud to the Kindergartners as the
final step in their mastery.

Side note: The books can be on any level that is appropriate
for the student they may need your help in making sure that
they choose books that are not too easy or difficult for them
to successfully master within a couple fo weeks but remember
that you want the project to be challenging and not easy so be
careful not to underestimate their abilities.
