Background Assessment
This game is designed to teach the principle of brainstorming, while assessing the students' knowledge about the words in the chosen list. The instructions are simple. Develop a list of words on a particular topic similar to the one below. Have the students write down the first three words that come into their heads for each word. This particular list would give the teacher an idea of what the students know about writing. It also helps the teacher learn which students enjoy language arts/writing, as well as providing an opportunity for students to have fun with a language arts/writing exercise without realizing that it is an exercise in knowledge. A follow up activity could be to have the students use these words to write a paragraph about writing.
