Methods of Fluency to use in a third grade Language Arts class
Fluency
Maintain eye contact with the child during his/her
attempts to read. By showing them you have the time to wait their ability to
read with fluency is increased because they no longer feel the rush to read
fast and without accuracy. This will help the students to take the time to read
and to develop the fluency skills they will use as they grow and develop.
When talking to a student, model a slow rate of speech with
appropriate phrasing. When the child is shown how to properly speak then the
child may be more inclined to model the method that they are shown.
Give the students a simple paragraph of unvaried, subject-verb
structured sentences. Then have the students evaluate and rewrite the paragraph
for fluency. By doing this you can see if the child understands what fluency is
and if they are capable of writing with fluency.
