Manipulatives
1.
Costumes! Costumes are always a
fun hands on manipulative you could use in class if
you were
reading a play, doing reader’s theatre, or simply reenacting a story or book in
class.
- A
great way to enhance a multicultural/language art curriculum would be to
have the students do artwork for the culture you are learning about. For instance if you were learning about
Haiku, you could have the students write their own Haiku poetry and then
have a lesson on Japanese art and have them illustrate their Haiku poem. Or if you were reading a book about
Native Americans, you could have the students learn to do sand
painting.
- Another
way to learn about different cultures as you are reading about them would
be to learn about music from that culture, and have the students learn to
play some basic music on instruments. For instance, students could learn to
play some simple pieces on the ukulele or they could learn to play some
Latin rhythms on marimbas, congas, shakers, timbales, or clavas.
