Standard 8: Objective 2 Compose a Written Draft
Meaningful writing assignments will help each student be excited about what they are writing. It is our job, as teachers, to give writing assignments that are not only meaningful, but effective to the learning process. If we incorporate reading and writing assignments, students will more than likely understand the reading better and enjoy the writing assignment. In order to do this, teachers must come up with authentic ways to have children write. For example:
Each student can make a book jacket about the reading assignment. This includes the title, a description of what they are learning, and will give a review of what they already know or have learned. For example: The students might make a book about geometric shapes.
Making a song is also an effective way of making a creative writing assignment. If the students read a book on numbers or how to solve math problems, they can make up a song that goes with each number or step.
A poem or short story is also another type of effective writing. The poem is like the song, except there are multiple ways to construct a poem. For example:
The students might write a poem about how they perceive math.
Picture books can also be a creative way to incorporate reading and writing. Making a picture book will be effective if the student designs the book as if they are going to teach a younger child about a concept they just read about. It also might be possible to go into a younger classroom and have the students buddy-up and teach their concept with the book. For example: The students might use the concept they have previously learned such as fractions, whole numbers, and percents; then the students might modify those concepts to enable them to teach those concepts to younger children.
