Student Dictionary
Each
student will acquire many words throughout the year they are unfamiliar
with. As teachersŐ, it is our job
to help them to understand various words so they might increase their
vocabulary and knowledge. Making a
student dictionary will help them to increase this knowledge.
As the year goes on, each student will
be required to keep his or her own dictionary. In the student dictionary the
student may write and describe words he or she does not understand. They may retrieve definitions from
other dictionaries, parents, siblings, and teachers. The teacher should
encourage that each definition has an example and picture as well. This will help the students to
understand the concepts. The
teacher will periodically check the student dictionary to see if words are spelled
correctly and if definitions are correct.
When the year is coming to an end, the teacher can then collect all
studentsŐ dictionaries and combine them to make one big dictionary for the
students to keep with them.
Students with Disabilities
These
students might cooperate with the other students in making illustrations of the
words. This will enable the students with disabilities to have a complete dictionary
with all of the new words as pictures.
