Decoding Strategies (2)

Making Words or Test Twist Students are given a set number of letters to manipulate.  They are then to make as many words as they can using only those letters they were given.  They continue this practice until they make a word using all the letters.

Ex.  The letters given are:  deladr words that can come from these letters are:  ale, lad, ladle, dead, lead, led, and so on.  The word using all the letters is ladder.

Evolving words Students take a starting word and transform it into another word by changing one letter at a time.  For example:

                                    Snake                                       King                                         Yolk

                                    Shake                                       Sing                                          Folk

                                    Shame                                      Sink                                         Fold

This can be done by giving the beginning and ending word and having the students come up with the word or words in the middle or giving clues to help them come up with the correct word.  Ex.   This word is yolk, change it to a word that a type of story or tale, change it again to a word that means to bend.
