Decoding Strategies
Strategy #1 (Standard IV, Objective 2-a)
A. Have the students write
several sentences that include contractions and compound words on the
chalkboard. Have the rest of the
students write them on a piece of paper.
B. Have the students identify
which words are contraction and compound words.
C. For
example:
1. I
canÕt (contraction) see the rainbow (compound).
2. I
didnÕt (contraction) baby-sit (compound) last
night.
3. I
couldnÕt (contraction) play football (compound).
4. We shouldnÕt (contraction) listen to a
loudspeaker
(compound) too close.
5. I go to high school (compound) at 9 oÕclock
(contraction).
Strategy #2 (Standard IV, Objective 2-e)
A. Create
a wall with letter patterns that will help the
students
decode words.
B. For
example: (_ack, _ail, _ake)
~Rack, back, stack, sack, smack
