Social Studies Center

Our Social Studies center will include three computers with access to the internet, a couch, two comfortable chairs, a coffee table, and a large work table with chairs.  On a wall near the center will be a bulletin board and a magazine rack.  The purpose of the center is for students to relax and discuss issues in the world.  On the coffee table will be magazines and newspapers.  Students are to use the news papers and magazines along with the internet to find topics of interest and discuss them as a group.

Each group is required to design their own magazine or news paper.  After discussing articles of interest, each group will decide what topics they will include in their magazine or newspaper.  The group must choose a minimum of three topics, and then give a short description of the topic, how it will affect our lives or their own life, and how they feel about it.  All topics in each magazine or news paper must come from a different category such as politics, economy, environment, education or health just to name a few.  Groups will then work together to design their magazine or news paper using the computers and/or materials provided at the work table.  Students need to make their magazine or news paper look attractive to encourage other students in the class to read because they will be placed on the magazine rack.  (See sharing venue).
