2nd Comprehension Strategy
Purpose: Students will be able to explain the three steps to this strategy.
Students will learn how to implement this strategy when they read so that they can understand what they are reading
When to use: This can be used when students are asked to do reading journals
Description/Procedures:
1) Teacher helps students understand that just because people read doesn’t mean they understand what they are reading
2) Students will learn the strategy UWL.
A) UWL means: U is what we understand, W is what we want to understand. And L is what we have learned.
B) Steps:
1.) Students make a list of what they understand about the topic.
2.) Students make a list of what they want to understand about the topic
3.) Students then read the book
4.) Students make a list of what they have learned.
3) The teacher will show the students by putting an example on the board.
A) The teacher will list on the board of what he/she understand about the topic
B) The teacher will list of what he/she want to understand about the topic or find out about the chapter or text
C) The teacher will read out loud 2-5 pages of the book
D) The teacher them lists what he/she has learned from the 2 pages.
4) The teacher will see if the students understand:
A) The teacher will read 2-5 more pages of the story
B) The teacher will list the student responses that are using the UWL strategy. The teacher will list the responses on the board.
