M. Ed. in Secondary Education, June 1991, emphasis: reading and literacy - Weber State University, Ogden, Utah - GPA 3.96 of 4.00.

Ph. D. in Literacy and Language (additional emphases: Foreign Language Education, Emergent & Early Childhood Education, Educational Technology, and Educational Research), December 1995 - Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana - GPA 3.98 of 4.00.

EXPERIENCE:

May '99 - Present: Assistant Professor of Reading in the Department of Teacher Education at Southern Utah University teaching courses in Elementary and Secondary Reading and Writing Instruction and Assessment, as well as, Historical Foundations and Critical Issues in Literacy at the Graduate and Undergraduate Level.

Sep. '96 to May '99: Assistant Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at the University of South Alabama teaching Fundamentals of Teaching, Teaching Skills, Teaching Language Subjects in Secondary Schools, Improving Reading and Study Skills, Foundations of Reading Instruction (designed for elementary and middle school teachers), Teaching Reading (designed for elementary teachers), Qualitative Research (grad. level), Reading and Study Skills in the Content Areas (grad. level), Using the Computer to Enhance Literacy (proposed grad. level course), and supervising elementary and secondary student teachers.

Aug. '92 to Aug. '95: Graduate Teaching Assistant at Purdue University teaching Content Area Reading for Secondary Teachers and Using the Computer to Teach Reading and Writing in the School of Education and supervising approximately. 90 preservice teachers in a required field experience - Department of Curriculum and Instruction '92 to '95. Taught German 101 and 102 in the School of Liberal Arts - Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures 92' to '93.

Aug. '87 to Jun. '92: Teacher of German, Math and English at T. H. Bell Jr. High School in Ogden, Utah. Worked on various curriculum development projects in both subject areas.

Aug. '86 to Jun. '87: Teacher of German and Basic Computer Science at Box Elder High School in Brigham City, Utah.

CERTIFICATIONS:

Utah Secondary Education Certificate; with endorsements for the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education, all levels of German, and a Level III endorsement for Mathematics (expired 1996 currently in renewal process).

ACTIVITIES:

  • Former member of the Bookstore Committee of the University of South Alabama
  • Current member of the Faculty Senate Finance Committee at Southern Utah University
  • Current member of the Southern Utah University Academic Computer Users Committee
  • Current member of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, the International Reading Association , IRA's Honor Society---Alpha Upsilon Alpha (currently serving as member of the IRA Alpha Upsilon Alpha international steering committee & university chapter advisor; previously served as treasurer for two years), Utah Council of the International Reading Association (served as editor of the program for the year 2000 annual meeting, currently serving as the Conference Chair for the 2001 annual meeting), and National Reading Conference (serving on the Field Council with responsibility as Webmaster for the NRC Collaborative Research Network, as the NRC co-eeditor, and as a member of the technology committee, reviewed program proposals for the 1999 and 2000 annual conferences)
  • Currently serving on the committee at Southern Utah University charged with the responsibility of preparing for NCATE accreditation and as a committee member on the academic computer use committee.
  • Serving as ad hoc editor for Addison Wesley Longman publishers. Reviewed the text "From Words to Fluency" by Rasinski and Padak; and reviewed the text proposal for "Sound it Out" by Savage--both reviews in 1999.
  • Conduct in-service training for teachers in local school districts and assist in the preparation of faculty at SUU to more fully integrate technology into classrooms.
  • Former member of the Technology Committee and PTA Board Member over Technology at Mary B. Austin Elementary School, Mobile, AL.
  • Former member of Weber Education Association, Utah Education Association, NEA, Utah Foreign Language Association, Utah Association of Teachers of German, American Association of Teachers of German, Phi Delta Kappa, Alabama Reading Association, Mobile Metro Area Reading Council, American Education Research Association, and Mid-south Education Research Association.
  • Served on the committee charged with restructure of the elementary and secondary teacher education programs at the University of South Alabama, and on the committee to revise the teacher education programs there from a quarter system to a semester system
  • Previously worked with Professor David G. O'Brien, Chairman of a Committee to evaluate and restructure the course requirements for the secondary education certification program at Purdue University as unofficial member.
  • Served as member of the task force to recommend restructure of the Graduate Education requirements at Purdue University.
  • Served on the task force to recommend restructure of the elementary education program at Purdue University.
  • Served a two-year religious mission in Germany for the LDS Church 1972-1974.

HONORS:

  • Listed in Strathmore's "Who's Who", 1999-2000 edition.
  • Listed in "Who's Who among American Teachers", 1991 edition and in 1994-95 edition of "Who's Who in American Education."
  • Within the Boy Scouts of America received the Duty to God Award, Eagle Scout Award, and Lakeview District Award of Merit for service to scouting, was elected to receive the Vigil Honor in the Order of the Arrow, and completed the adult leader training course called Woodbadge, subsequently serving on 2 Woodbadge Staffs.
  • Received the Josephine Beam Scholarship for Math at the University of Utah in 1971 and the departmental scholarship for secondary education from the Weber State University Department of Education in 1991.
  • Received Purdue Research Foundation Grants for summer semesters of 1994 and 1995.

An index compiled to organize the semiotics papers written by students along with professional articles in the field that have been collected by Professor Myrdene Anderson of the Anthropology Department at Purdue University. The index will serve as a guide to information in the collection and is organized by author, type of work, location, and key word (145 pages).
