SUU ENGL 1010: Introduction to Academic Writing

Policies--listed in alphabetical order

Academic Honesty
  • Scholastic dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent. You are expected to have read and understood the current issue of the student handbook (published by Student Services) regarding student responsibility and rights, and the intellectual property policy about procedures and acceptable on-campus behavior.
  • Plagiarism means presenting other people's words, ideas, or information as your own. Sources must be cited for all quotations and paraphrases using MLA-style parenthetical citations and an MLA-style Works Cited list. Paraphrases must be presented in your own words and should not follow the sentence structure of the original. Document paraphrases as you do quotes.  Do not take large blocks of material from any one source.
  • University policy states that an instance of plagiarism can result in a failing grade for an assignment or a failing grade for the course.  A report will be filed with the department chair in any case of plagiarism in class. If the situation warrants, the report will also be filed with the Dean of Students.
Attendance Policy and Class Contribution Points
Your participation is necessary in order for the class to work successfully. It is essential, therefore, you prepare for and attend every class. You will demonstrate your efforts by completing assignments and by participating  in class discussions and activities.  No late homework will be accepted unless it meets the documented emergency or school-sanctioned excuse standards.  Departmental policy says that you must attend 80 percent of composition classes  in order to pass. However, ANY absence is likely to affect your grade. Absences will be counted the first class period following the date your name appears on the class list.

Don't send me your assignments via e-mail, unless I ask for them in that format.

You may miss a total of 15 flex points worth of homework points with no penalty. (In-class assignments are usually worth 5 points and homework assignment, 10 points.) No other make-up assignments or bonus points are possible, except under the circumstances listed above.

Cell phones and text messaging
Please urn off your cell phone ringer in class. Do not take or make calls or exchange text messages in class. If you have a pressing need to answer a call (for instance, if you are a parent whose child is calling), please leave the classroom.
E-mail procedures: Use your SUU e-mail address. Please insert a specific subject line NOT "English" or "Hi."  Please note that I check e-mail and voicemail once every weekday at times listed in my contact information. I often don't check my e-mail on weekends. Don't send me assignments by e-mail, unless I ask for them in that format.
Evaluations of the course
Students will evaluate the class using the campus Web-CT system
Grading and Revision Standards

Major projects will be assessed according to the rubric that will be included with each assignment description and graded according the the scale that appears below.

  • A copy of your graded paper INCLUDING my grading sheets and comments.
