SUU ENGL 2030: Advanced Grammar

Policies

Attendance Policy and Class Contribution Points
Daily attendance and participation are strongly required.
  • Please note: The more questions you ask, the more exercises you complete, the more you participate in discussions, the more you will learn. Although the required textbooks will help you understand language structures and learn academic usage rules, they will not give you what teachers and writers need at least as much:  the exchange of ideas that will give you a framework for deciding what you should do in your classroom with your students.
  •  Because this is NOT an introductory class, I expect you to enter class with an understanding of parts of speech and sentence structure. If you lack such an understanding, you may need to consult the tutors in the Writing Center. (Most of them have successfully taken this class from me--but be sure to ask if your tutor has completed the class.)
  • Make-up work is not possible except in the case of documented emergencies and officially excused SUU events. You may drop 30 quiz/assignment points, however. If you miss a major test, you may complete the scheduled re-take. However, you will not be able to retake the retake!

Cell phones and text messaging
Turn off your cell phone ringer in class. Do not take or make calls or exchange text messages in class. If you have a pressing need to answer a call (for instance, if you are a parent whose child is calling), please leave the classroom to answer the call if at all possible.

Plagiarism
  • Plagiarism means presenting other people's words, ideas, or information as your own. Sources must be cited for all quotations and paraphrases using MLA-style parenthetical citations and an MLA-style Works Cited list. Paraphrases must be presented in your own words and should not follow the sentence structure of the original. Document paraphrases as you do quotes.  Do not take large blocks of material from any one source.
  • University policy states that an instance of plagiarism can result in a failing grade for an assignment or a failing grade for the course.  A report will be filed with the department chair in any case of plagiarism in class. If the situation warrants, the report will also be filed with the Dean of Students.
  • You will submit all major papers to the Comment website. The instructor may also ask for submission of daily homework assignments.
  • The HSS policies and procedures handout governs the way plagiarism cases are handled in our college.

Rude and Disruptive Behavior
During class discussions, you, of course, will show respect towards me and your classmates. Rude and disruptive behavior will not be tolerated in this class. Southern Utah University students are governed by the Student Responsibilities and Rights section of University Policy that makes it clear that students are expected to demonstrate "conduct that respects the rights and interests of others"  Students who violate expected standards of conduct will be subject to disciplinary action.

Support Services
Students with medical, psychological, learning, or other disabilities desiring academic adjustments, accommodation, or auxiliary aids will need to contact Student Support Services in Room 206F, Sharwan Smith Center, or phone (435-865-8022).
