SUU ENGL 2030: Advanced Grammar

Requirements

Requirement One: Attendance and Active Participation  (10 percent)/100 points)
Daily attendance and participation are strongly suggested
  • Please note: The more questions you ask, the more exercises you complete, the more you participate in discussions, the more you will learn. Although the required textbooks will help you understand language structures and learn academic usage rules, they will not give you what teachers and writers need at least as much:  the exchange of ideas that will give you a framework for deciding what you should do in your classroom with your students.
  •  Because this is NOT an introductory class, I expect you to enter class with an understanding of parts of speech and sentence structure. If you lack such an understanding, you may need to consult the tutors in the Writing Center. (Most of them have successfully taken this class from me--but be sure to ask if your tutor has completed the class.)
  • Although attendance records will be important in helping me evaluate this area, your daily preparation and willingness to contribute relevant and specific comments will be just as important.

Requirement Two: Quizzes/assignments (30 percent/300 points--note change)
Because we’ll be covering a lot of detailed information quickly, you’ll need a way to track your progress. For this reason, realize I might quiz you during any class period. As noted above, you MAY miss quiz and/or assignments worth 30 points (in total) with no penalty. If you complete all assignments, I'll drop your lowest score(s) equivalent to 30 points. To compute this portion of the grade, I'll figure the percentage of points you earn compared to the percentage possible.
  • Please don’t ask to make up quizzes or to turn them in late except in cases of documented emergencies or illnesses or school-related functions that carry officially excused absences.
  • Please note: I may ask you during class go the class website to find a copy of a quiz that should be completed by the next class period. If you miss a class, it is your responsibility to check to make sure that you come prepared to the next session. Sorry, but if you arrive without the necessary materials, you'll have to take a miss.
  • There may be a few assignments that will be duplicated in ENGL1120 and 2030. When a duplicate assignment is listed, simply turn in a copy of 1120 work for the same credit you received there.

Requirement Three: Major Tests (60 percent/600 points--note change)

There will be four major tests worth 100-150 points each.
You may retake any of the tests once at the times announced in class. Retakes cover the same material as the original test, but offer few of the same questions. The tests are cumulative in that you must be able to understand and apply material covered early in the semester in order to perform well at the end.
As noted above, if you miss a major test, you may complete the scheduled re-take. However, you will not (as I note above) be able to retake the retake.
