Course policies

Academic integrity:                                                                                             Scholastic dishonesty will not be tolerated and will be prosecuted to the fullest extent. You are expected to have read and understood the current issue of the student handbook (published by Student Services) regarding student responsibilities and rights, and the intellectual property policy, for information about procedures and about what constitutes acceptable on-campus behavior.

The policy as applied in this class is simply stated: If you copy someone else’s work or cheat in any other way on a daily assignment or quiz, you will be given a zero for that assignment; that zero cannot be used as your dropped score. If you are caught cheating more than once, you will fail the class.  If you cooperate with a cheater, you will also fail.

ADA statement:

Students with medical, psychological, learning or other disabilities desiring academic adjustments, accommodations or auxiliary aids will need to contact the Southern Utah University Coordinator of Services for Students with Disabilities (SSD), in Room 206F of the Sharwan Smith Center or phone (435) 865-8022. SSD determines eligibility for and authorizes the provision of services.

Required attendance, allowable revision, late work, and tardiness.

· Your participation is necessary for the class to work successfully and for you to understand not only what we are doing, but why. It is essential, therefore, that you prepare for and attend every class. You may NOT make up missed quizzes, in-class, or homework assignments unless you document an illness, family emergency, military obligation, or an officially sanctioned military or SUU excused absence. In the latter case, your commanding officer, coach or advisor needs to send me an e-mail using his/her e-mail address or a note on SUU letterhead stationery confirming the need for the absence. Please note:  Absences for personal reasons are not considered “excused” even if you let the professor know about them in advance. Anyone who misses nine or more class period without documenting excused absences will automatically fail.  No one who misses more than 3 unexcused class periods will be eligible for an Grade of A  See the policy link for more details.

· Ten points are deducted from the ending course total for every unexcused absence.

·  You are allowed 30 drop points during the semester to cover absences or missed assignments. However, be aware that the syllabus will indicate several assignments that may not be dropped because they are “REQUIRED.” Also be aware that although most in-class exercises count as 5 points and most take-home assignments count 10 points, some assignments in both categories count as much as 20 points. Also keep in mind that in-class assignments are usually not announced in advance.

· You may make up excused Canvas Daily Assignments only after you have used all of your allowed drop points.

· Penalties and drop points are not tallied until the end of the semester and will not affect your grade percentage total until then.

· You may revise all major essays, except for the final draft of the final essay; if your grade on the rewrite is higher than the original, you will receive that grade minus any point losses for turning in the original essay late. To qualify for a rewrite grade, you should turn your new essay in by the rewrite deadline that will be announced in class as the professor completes grading each essay submission.

· Daily homework assignments will need to be submitted on Canvas under the appropriate assignment template by the time class begins. In addition, you sometimes will be asked to bring a paper copy of your assignment to class, but that paper version will not count for grading purposes. Do not e-mail me assignments or send them to me as through the Canvas messaging system; submit them on Canvas under the appropriate assignment link.

· You must submit complete and submit all  major essay projects listed on the essay link and receive at least a C– on each one to be eligible to pass the class, no matter what you course total is.

·  You may turn in major essay  project late, but you will lose a half of  letter grade for each day beyond the due date—and you may not make up late penalties if you rewrite.

· If you are late for class and miss a quiz or an exercise, that work will be tallied as a missed assignment.

· You are required to work with a Writing Center tutor  for at least a half hour on your first or second essay. Be sure to ask your tutor to provide me with a “green sheet” to document your writing center visit. You may earn up to five percent of your essay total  on each of your other major projects  by working for an hour with a writing assistant in the Writing Center by noon the weekday BEFORE the day the paper is due.

Canvas: All homework assignments and essays will need to be submitted through the campus Canvas and Turn It In systems under the appropriate templates.

Civility                                                                                                                      Although argument is part of this class, you are expected to be respectful of others in presenting your viewpoints.

Class evaluations                                                                                                     Your evaluations of this class are important , so you will be asked to complete  the in-class HSS “IDEA” survey near the end of the semester.
