SUU English 1010: Book Choices

How many books will you read this semester?
- You--along with everyone else--read The House on Mango Street during the first two weeks of the class.
- Then, besides reading material from your texts, the St. Martin's Guide to Writing (5th edition) and the Scott-Foresman Handbook (4th or 5th edition), you'll read one book from each of the following two sets on the time schedule indicated by the syllabus:
- First set (choose one):
- Second set (choose one):
Why so much reading?

Aren't all these books going to get expensive?
They might. So look in your local library first to see if you can borrow the books you need. If you need to buy any of the novels from the bookstore, you'll find the prices quite low because paperback editions are available for all but one of the choices. Be sure to ask the bookstore for a used copy to keep your costs even lower.

Since this is a university class, the book list has been chosen for adult college readers. You and your parents should review the book list together and decide which choices are appropriate for you. To help you make your decision, novel descriptions indicate the level of sexual and/or violent content in each book, according to the instructor's perception. However, the descriptions are guides only: what seems like inoffensive content to the instructor may not be appropriate for you. If you and your parents are worried about a given book, you should preview it before you begin reading.
