Dr. L. Grace St. Pierre, Assistant Professor, mezzo soprano, joined the SUU faculty in 2004 and is Director of Choral Activities, and teaches Voice, Concert Choir, OPUS, Advanced Choral Conducting, and Choral Methods/Literature. She has also taught at Indiana University Southeast, Augustana College, and Fort Hays State University. Grace’s career has brought her performances as a soloist at the Kennedy Center, the White House, Lyric Opera of Kansas City, Washington Opera, Wolf Trap Opera, Washington Oratorio Society, and with the St. Louis Symphony. She has performed all over the world as a former member and soloist of the United States Air Force Singing Sergeants, Washington, D.C. and has sung, studied and coached internationally under such notable conductors as Craig Jessop, Leonard Slatkin, Sarah Caldwell, Norman Scribner, Margaret Hillis, and Christopher Hogwood. Currently a Guest Conductor with the Orchestra of Southern Utah and Director of the Cedar City Festival City Community Chorale, Grace has conducted numerous professional, university and community choirs, musical theater and opera.
Professional affiliations include vice-president of NATS Las Vegas chapter, Board of Directors and member of the American Choral Directors Association, serving as the Utah’s Co-chairman for Repertoire and Standards-Four Year Colleges and Universities. Active in the community and state as an adjudicator, conductor and clinician, Grace has just returned from Manaus, Brazil, where she conducted concerts with one of Brazil’s finest professional choirs, the Coral do Amazonas as a visiting artist and guest of the Brazilian Ministry of Cultural Affairs. Having completed extensive doctoral studies in voice performance at the University of Texas-Austin, Grace holds her DMA in Choral Conducting from University of Missouri-Kansas City-Conservatory of Music, a M.M. in Voice Performance and Bachelor’s degrees in both Music Education and Voice Performance, all from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. She is a member of Pi Kappa Lambda and Sigma Alpha Iota and holds Lifetime Teaching Certification in Missouri.
