Iraq's Future

The war has ended and now Iraq must be rebuilt.  Getting the oil to flow again has been a big step.  However the 170,000 barrels a day are a far cry from the country's potential of around 4 million barrels a day.  But just getting the oil flowing isn't going to be enough.  Iraq will need solid institutions in order to become a thriving nation.  Health care services will need to be restored. The WHO, the Red Cross/Crescent, and others have begun this process.  The local government, in what ever form it takes, will not only need to be rebuilt physically, but local officials will need to be taught how to lead and manage a society, not just take it over.  Education will need much reform, since much of the curriculum was designed to build support for Saddam Hussein.  A stable infrastructure will be needed in order to maintain a stable way of life.  Reliable and effective power grids, sewer and water systems, public buildings, airports and seaports, and roads and highways are often viewed as key to a societies well being.  These institutions as well as others play a crucial role in the rebuilding and future success of Iraq.
