Objective:  To develop an advanced  understanding of instrumental analysis in Forensic Chemistry.  The focus of this class will center around chromatography, mass spectroscopy and IR and UV-Vis Spectroscopy.  Students that complete this course will have both a theorectical understanding and a  working knowledge of this important instrumentation used in Forensic Chemistry.  Students will know how they work and will be able to use them.

Required Texts:           Forensic Science Handbook 4th  Edition Richard Saferstein.

Principles of Instrumental Analysis 6th Edition Skoog, Holler, Nieman

In order to achieve the objectives of this class, the Skoog text will be used as primary reference, The Saferstein text will be used to supplement the text .  Additionally, current modern instrumentation literature will be reviewed in class to prepare students with instrumentation, that they will encounter in the workplace.

Grading Policy:  Your grade will be based on two exams:  A midterm and a final.  Each will be equally weighted.  The final will not be comprehensive.

Tentative Exam Schedule:
