Assessment Criteria and Activities

Entire Department
1. Before achieving advanced standing, art students must successfully complete (with a grade of "C" or higher) a rigorous foundation program designed to prepare them for advanced and independent study.

Was this assessment criterion implemented? Yes
Was the assessment criterion achieved? Yes
What were the results?

Art students were better prepared to succeed in upper division Art classes. Jeff Abt, visiting artist and professor at Wayne State, commented on the high overall skill level that our students possessed during his visit as a convocation speaker.

How will the results be used to improve the curriculum and/or pedagogy of the program?
The results proved to be a confirmation of the benefits of a rigorous foundation program and we will continue the practice.

2. Art students must pass all lower division classes with at least a "C".

Was this criterion implemented? Yes
Was the assessment criterion achieve? Yes
What were the results?

Students who could not successfully grasp the basic concepts or perform basic skills were given a grade of "C" or lower. Thus, requiring them to repeat the course until they do.

How will the results be used to improve the curriculum and/or pedagogy of the program?
Students are better prepared for upper division and independent studio work. This allows us as teachers to expect and receive higher quality work.

3. Depending on emphasis, art students are required to take Art 2710, 2720, 2730, 2740- Art History series, which successfully informs and prepares them to critically articulate personal exploration in the historical context. This is also a requirement for graduate study.

Was this assessment criterion implemented? Yes
Was this assessment criterion achieved? Yes
What were the results?

Because this requirement has been intact for some time, the results are not new or surprising. However, our students have considerable knowledge of the history of Art. This prepares them in their own personal exploration and makes them more suitable for graduate study.

How will the results be used to improve the curriculum and/or pedagogy of the program?
We will continue with this requirement.

4. Art majors with a studio emphasis must pass a sophomore revue conducted by the faculty before entering into upper division, advanced study or independent study classes.

Was the assessment criterion implemented? No
Was the assessment criterion achieved? No
What were the results?

We had hoped to implement this requirement this year during our regularly scheduled department meeting times. However, we filled all our meeting times with the prioritization document and our search for a new faculty member in Illustration. We are now shooting for Fall to implement this new requirement.

5. Depending on emphasis, all art students are required to take Art 4790- Senior Portfolio which requires them to prepare for an exhibition and to document their undergraduate work in the form of a professional portfolio.

Was this assessment criterion implemented? Yes
Was this assessment criterion achieved? Yes
What were the results?

All of our seniors who were required to take this course successfully prepared a final portfolio and participated in an exhibition at the Braithwaite Gallery.

How will the results be used to improve the curriculum and/or pedagogy of the program?
We will continue with this requirement.

6. All art majors must take Art 1300- Art Major Seminar every semester. This class presents a visiting lecturer every week. Art related topics are discussed. The University and the community are invited to attend.

Was this assessment criterion implemented? Yes
Was this assessment criterion achieved? Yes
What were the results?

Students were exposed to a large variety of skills, mediums, styles and concepts from national recognized artists.

How will the results be used to improve the curriculum and/or pedagogy of the program?
We will continue with this requirement.

7. Although not mandatory, art students are highly encouraged to enter juried student and professional exhibitions at the regional and national level.

Was this assessment criterion implemented? Yes
Was this assessment criterion achieved? Yes
What were the results?

Over a dozen art students entered art work into regional juried art exhibitions. Ten students had work accepted into exhibitions.

How will the results be used to improve the curriculum and/or pedagogy of the program?
More students should be entering juried exhibitions, especially in the area of Graphic Design. We will encourage more of our students to enter exhibitions in the following year.
