What were the results?
The general results were very good. Some students, primarily lower division students, still
struggled in some classes.
How will the results be used to improve the curriculum and/or pedagogy of the program?
We are using these data to help identify/assist students who may be in trouble
academically.
2. Communication courses will contain activities which will enable students to demonstrate a reasonable level of proficiency in the skills they have learned.Was this assessment criterion implemented? yes no

Very good success.How will the results be used to improve the curriculum and/or pedagogy of the program?
The movement is to have less lecturing in courses and more hands-on involvement in
problem-solving and analysis on the part of the students.
3. Each senior will write a paper on a chosen or assigned communication theory in the Communication Theory course. They will exhibit proper use of the APA form and achieve a score of not less than 80 percent.Was this assessment criterion implemented? yes no

This was a challenging assignment, but it was successful.How will the results be used to improve the curriculum and/or pedagogy of the program?
This assignment provides a "capstone" experience for our majors.4. A departmental newsletter will be produced each year which will be sent to all available graduates. A portion of the newsletter will contain an inquiry which the person will return to the Communication Department which details their current employment and asks pertinent questions regarding the quality of their education.

The newsletter is due to be circulated in the fall of 2001.How will the results be used to improve the curriculum and/or pedagogy of the program?
It will secure feedback from the departmental publics.5. A survey will be administered to graduating seniors each year which will contain a quantifiable, written portion and, also, an oral interview.

The written portion was conducted, but the quantifiable was not completed.How will the results be used to improve the curriculum and/or pedagogy of the program?
It will use the comments from graduating seniors as a resource for improvement in the
department. It will also provide a yardstick for judging the success of the program.
Once you submit your report, it will be electronically mailed to the Associate Provost's Office. It will also appear in a new web documents that will be posted to the University's web site. You should print this page as your hard copy.
The Associate Provost will compile assessment reports for the Provost and for the University's assessment program.
Should the department wish to make any changes in the report for 2000-2001, feel free to write on a paper copy and forward any changes to the Associate Provost's Office by September 10, 2001.
