Assessment Criteria and Activities

Entire Department

1. Department majors and minors will pass all classes in their Social Science subject major and/or minors with a C grade or better as assessed by the professional professors assigned to the respective classes.

Was this assessment criterion implemented? [x] yes [] no
Was this assessment criterion achieved? [] yes [x] no
What were the results?
We had some minors who received D and F grades in minor courses.

How will the results be used to improve the curriculum and/or pedagogy of the program?
We hope to improve advisement, and help for those in trouble in a course. Requirements, in some instances, may be changed.

2. Comprehensive pre and post assessment tests appropriate to the respective discipline will be administered to majors in each of the disciplines.

Was this assessment criterion implemented? [x] yes [] no
Was this assessment criterion achieved? [x] yes [] no
What were the results?
This was applied in history and political science and the results of the post tests showed roughly an 18 percent improvement.

How will the results be used to improve the curriculum and/or pedagogy of the program?
Results show significant improvement. We do hope to improve the writing and analytical skills of students by requiring more writing assignments and more critical thinking activities.

3. Graduating majors in the Social Science disciplines will complete at least one original piece of research using the acceptable style manual for the respective discipline.

Was this assessment criterion implemented? [x] yes [] no
Was this assessment criterion achieved? [x] yes [] no (for History & Political Science)
What were the results?
All majors completed the original research requirement prior to graduation with B or better grades. Three papers were published in house, cash awards were given for the best papers, and one was presented at a state regional conference.

How will the results be used to improve the curriculum and/or pedagogy of the program?
We will continue to require original research and intensive efforts at collaborative endeavors.

4. Post graduate surveys of students and employers will determine satisfaction with preparation in the major, with employment, employer satisfaction with discipline major employees, and success in admission to graduate school and levels of graduate school performance.

Was this assessment criterion implemented? [x] yes [] no
Was this assessment criterion achieved? [x] yes [] no
What were the results?

Satisfaction is at a very high level for those employers we were able to identify and contact. We do not need to do a better job locating employers besides those who go into secondary education.

How will the results be used to improve the curriculum and/or pedagogy of the program?
We will use information that shows any deficiencies or areas of dissatisfaction and make concentrated efforts to improve those aspects of our curriculum and pedagogy that might relate to the areas that need improvement according to employer survey responses.
