Assessment Criteria and Activities

Entire Department

1. Every course and professor will be evaluated each semester by students to assess course content, instruction, and course goals/outcomes. This will follow existing university guidelines.

*All tenure track and clinical instructors had each of their courses evaluated. As per University policy, tenured faculty had only one class evaluated each semester. It is hoped in the future that post-tenure evaluation will require tenured faculty to have all courses to be evaluated on a regular basis.

What were the results?
Feedback from students was tabulated with copies forwarded to faculty, Chair, and Dean. Follow-up was given to each faculty member verbally or in writing based upon the information found in the evaluations. was given for areas of strength and areas where improvement could be made.

How will the results be used to improve the curriculum and/or pedagogy of the program?
It is hoped that over time, faculty who are teaching well will continue to do so and receive the appropriate accolades and that faculty who demonstrate areas of need or improvement in their teaching will make the necessary modifications or seek remediative support.

2. Each course syllabus will contain attainable goals with measurable outcomes that assess student performance, understanding of content, demonstration of skills, or mastery of specific course objectives.

What were the results?
This is an on-going process as the College of Education pursues NCATE accreditation. It is required that all course syllabi be modified to meet NCATE as well as INTASC/ISLIC and other guidelines by Fall, 2001.

How will the results be used to improve the curriculum and/or pedagogy of the program?
A College Sub-committee of the PECC has been established to review all syllabi and ensure that they are in alignment with and articulate NCATE guidelines. All new syllabi are being collected, reviewed, and filed for future reference.

3. In collaboration, the Chair of the Department, Division Heads, and Faculty will assess course content and offerings on an annual basis and make changes or modifications as needed.

What were the results?
During the 2000-2001 Academic year, several courses were deleted, modified, or adapted based on this assessment process. This was does to improve the overall effectiveness and efficiency of Department Programs and course offerings. It was also done in order to meet NCATE accreditation needs and university Prioritization.

How will the results be used to improve the curriculum and/or pedagogy of the program?
It is anticipated that this will be an on-going process with the main goal of improving and strengthening department programs, curriculum, and instruction.

4. Grading statistics will be collected each semester and assessed using university guidelines.

What were the results?
*The Department of Teacher Education believes in fair, consistent, and equitable grading policies. As part of the NCATE accreditation process, grading policies are being reviewed along with course syllabi. It is hoped that during the next year, consistency in grading will be enhanced.

How will the results be used to improve the curriculum and/or pedagogy of the program?
The College of Education and the Department of Teacher Education are very aware of the need to decrease grade inflation. While the Department of Teacher Education is opposed to any type of “grade quotas or averages”, faculty are trying to improve and adhere to higher course standards and expectations.

5. Report the utilization of a variety of technological applications including but not limited to; computers, audio-visual use, web-based course development, internet applications and other means of enhancing instruction via technology.

What were the results?
The College of Education, under the direction of Dean Barker and several faculty, have implemented four “smart classroom” in Old Main. There are also plans of creating two more “smart classrooms”in the Old PE Building once faculty and offices move there later this summer. Teacher Education is committed to integrating the use of technology into all facets of instruction and management. The College is also promoting the development of more Web-based courses.

How will the results be used to improve the curriculum and/or pedagogy of the program?
The College of Education and the Department of Teacher Education look to the future, and the possibility of a new Education Building, with optimism and excitement. Plans are underway to create a “state of the art” educational facility which will promote improving teaching and learning.

Once you submit your report, it will be electronically mailed to the Associate Provost's Office. It will also appear in a new web documents that will be posted to the University's web site. You should print this page as your hard copy.

The Associate Provost will compile assessment reports for the Provost and for the University's assessment program.

Should the department wish to make any changes in the report for 2000-2001, feel free to write on a paper copy and forward any changes to the Associate Provost's Office by September 10, 2001.
