Academic Outcomes Assessment Plan
Academic Year 2001-2002

Mission Statement:
To prepare physical education, health education teachers and athletic trainers who are reflective, critical thinkers who value excellence in all areas of their profession.

Goal Statement:
Provide students with quality lecture, laboratory and field experiences to prepare them for the fields of teaching (physical education or health education) and/or athletic training and/or graduate study.

Intended Outcomes/Objectives:
1) Students will demonstrate an understanding of the human body and how it functions in the movement environment from the physiological, anatomical, psychological, sociological, pedagogical, and mechanical points of view as related to physical education, health education and athletic training.
a. Specifically students will demonstrate an understanding of the tools of inquiry and concepts related to educated professionals in their fields.
b. Students will demonstrate an understanding of individual learning and development as they relate to their professions.
c. Students will demonstrate an understanding of how individuals differ in their approaches to learning related to their specific field.
d. Students will demonstrate an understanding of motivation and how to foster a learning environment of positive social interactions and active learning for their diverse major.
e. Students will demonstrate effective and professional communication skills related to their respective majors.
f. Students will demonstrate the ability to plan and organize for effective learning in their respective majors.
g. Students will demonstrate an ability to assess effectively within their respective professions.
h. Students will demonstrate an ability to grow and reflect on their professional practice.
i. Students will demonstrate their ability to collaborate with colleagues and other professionals.

2) Students will demonstrate an understanding of good professional practice related to teaching and athletic training.
3) Students will indicate a satisfaction with learning opportunities presented to them by the Department.
4) Students will be prepared so they may be able to pursue graduate studies.

Assessment Criteria and Procedures:
1) All graduates will attain a grade of C- of better on all course work
related to these areas.
2) Ninety percent of graduates will have successfully completed
requirements for certification either as a physical or health educator
or as an athletic trainer.
3) Eighty percent of graduates will indicate on a college graduation
survey their satisfaction with learning experiences in the Department
of Physical Education at Southern Utah University.
4) Eighty percent of students will be accepted into graduate study or will
have an entry level position in their chosen profession.

Implementation:
1) No student shall be allowed to graduate with a grade less than C- in
his or her major or minor.
2) Survey of graduate records to verify those graduates who have
satisfied the requirements for Teacher Licensure or Athletic Training
Certification.
3) Survey to be administered to graduates upon graduation to assess their
satisfaction with their educational experience in the Department.
4) Survey students to determine those who have found employment or
who have chosen to attend graduate school.
