About the Project

The Hispanic Center Tutor Project is looking for SUU students willing to commit at least three hours per   week throughout the semester to a service project working with children in Iron County Schools (mostly in Cedar City or Enoch). Hispanic Center Tutors go to elementary, middle, high schools and the Iron County Adult Education Program, where adults learners study improve their English language skills.. Working with Mr. John Meisner, ESL Coordinator for the Iron County School District, the Hispanic Center match SUU students' availability with teachers and schools that express the desire to have help.

  • Volunteers tutor Hispanic children who could benefit from additional support in reading, writing and other academic subjects, as well as assistance in completing homework assignments.
  • The Project may be of special interest to Education and Spanish majors, and those who like service projects and working with Hispanic youth and community.
    • After receiving an assignment, all volunteers become eligible to earn one SUU credit, available through HSS 2120. The only requirement for the service learning credit, in addition to the three hours per week of service in a school, is the completion of reflection a questionnaire at the end of the semester.

Elementary, Middle and High schools tutoring hours range from Monday through Friday starting at 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

The  Iron County Adult Education hours are in the evening, Monday - Thursday, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
