students in snowshoes

EQUIPMENT

This project will require participants to carry (backpack) all their personal equipment into the yurt and the deep snow will require everyone to hike in snowshoes. Group equipment will be towed in pulks, equipment toboggans designed for the purpose. Every student should review the equipment lists provided on this page to make sure that all needs are met. For those who don't have all the necessary equipment the SUU Outdoor Center will offer some rentals at reasonable rates (below).

CLOTHING
The key to comfortable winter camping is layered clothing

Hat(s) (brimmed for sun protection, wool/fleece for warmth)
Shirt(s) (wool or insulated, avoid cotton)
Jackets (windbreaker/rain jacket and fleece/wool jacket)
Coat (large, insulated, outer layer)
Pants (wool, fleece, or insulated, ski pants/ bib-overalls are great)
Long underwear (polypropylene or other synthetic recommended)
Boots (sturdy, insulated and waterproof)
Gloves (more than one pair is recommended)
Socks (lightweight inner socks with thicker, wool or wool based outer socks)

Changing socks and underclothing is a key to staying warm.
