Designated a “national river” nearly 40 years ago, the Buffalo remains one of the few undammed rivers in the lower 48 states.  For 135 miles it cuts through massive limestone and sandstone formations as it flows east across the Ozarks in the northern part of the state, eventually joining up with the White River, which in turn heads south for the Arkansas and the Mississippi Rivers.  Depending on the time of year and recent weather, floaters on the Buffalo encounter a wide variety of stream conditions--from still, deep pools to exciting rapids, to shallows that must be portaged on foot while pulling boats along. 

The area is home to all manner of wildlife, from bobcats to black bears and many important species of bat.  In the Boxley Valley portion of the river, the state’s only elk herd attests to successful restoration efforts made by biologists in recent years.

This is our first "floating" PITP project and we are excited about this great addition to our 2013 program.
