Only 150 miles from downtown Los Angeles, CA, Joshua Tree National Park protects an amazing natural resource from urban encroachment. Viewed from the Interstate highway just south of the park, this desert ecosystem only hints at its vitality. Closer examination reveals a fascinating variety of plants and animals that make their home in this land shaped by strong winds, unpredictable torrents of rain, and climatic extremes. Dark night skies, a rich cultural history, and surreal geologic features make this park a great place for an alternative Spring Break experience.
The 1.6 million acre Mojave National Preserve lies just north of Joshua Tree. Larger and even more remote than its sister park it preserves the desert ecosystem and separates the metropolitan sprawl of Las Vegas and Los Angeles.
