Writing Center

Requirements for Employment in the Writing Center

The Writing Center hires writing assistants (who tutor in the center) and basic writing tutors (who work to facilitate student groups in ENGL 1000) every spring for positions that begin the following fall. We do occasionally need to hire an additional assistants during the school year.

Our requirements include the following:

  • English major or minor with at least second semester sophomore standing with 3.5 GPA in English and 3.0 overall GPA
  • Demonstrated academic writing ability
  • Completion of  ENGL 1010 (if required) and ENGL 2010 with grade of A or A-
  • Commitment to teaching and ability to communicate with writers of all levels
  • Demonstrated editing skills
  • Collegiality
  • Strong support by three academic English references sent to Dr. Julie Simon (simon@suu.edu); SUU English Department recommendations are preferred

We prefer applicants:

  • Who have completed ENGL 1120, 2030, and 2900 with a grade of A or A-
  • Who are certifying in secondary education
  • Who are members of Sigma Tau Delta or other campus organizations devoted to academic excellence
