Tutor Certification Guidelines

Expert Certification: $1 per hour raise above starting level (initiated at the end of one semester for the next)

  • You must complete this level of certification by the end of your second semester of tutoring to be eligible for continued employment except in connection with the requirement that asks you to complete 25 hours of tutoring. In such a case, submit the rest of your certification documentation to the director at the end of your second semester along with an explanation of why completing the 25-hour requirement has been difficult for you to complete.  
  • Attend Fall and Spring training workshops. Attend at least 3 additional tutor training meetings and activities.

  • Complete 25 hours of tutoring (actual tutoring with student). You may apply English 0990 hours, as well as the ESL labs)

  • Fully follow Writing Center policies and guidelines, including GPA standards

  • Be on time. Do not miss more than one shift without Director and Writing Center contact. Do not log more than three uncovered absences with contact for the previous and current semesters.

  • Complete a 5 to 10 page reflection journal. This journal is to be completed as you advance as a tutor. A journal entry should be completed about every 2 to 3 months. Moreover, the journal should reflect how your initial experiences with tutoring, how you have improved, and what you could still work on.

  • Conduct Composition Class Orientation. Please be sure to thoroughly detail the purpose of the Writing Center, the procedures, and who can sign up for the Writing Center services.

  • Observe one tutoring session and complete ¾ to a page journal entry. Be sure to record what you observed , what you learned, and how to apply this to your own tutoring sessions.

  • Use any technological medium of your choice (i.e. webcam, podcast, camera recording, etc.) to record a tutoring session on one of your own papers. Please include a copy of this inside your binder to turn in. Include a paragraph to a page response about what you learned.

  • Complete 3 Allyn-Bacon Guide to Tutoring summary and response reading logs. These responses can be from any chapters of your choosing.

  • Complete three additional professional article summaries and response reading logs from three articles/books of your choice.

  • Complete a detailed blog post about a grammar subject (i.e. commas, misplaced modifiers, etc.) you have problems with. Explain the problem to other tutors, post an activity that they can use to help their clients and invite them to complete that exercise. Review the results and respond to them. Please remember both to post this activity on the blog and to print these responses and include in your certification binder.

  •  Have another tutor observe you and critique you by taking notes. Use the other tutor’s notes to help write a ½ page reflection entry. Try to include what you learned, what you could improve on, and what you did well during the observation session.

  • Make sure to attend the majority of meetings for committees you signed up for as well as make goals and fulfill the tasks given. If you did not sign up for a committee, then this requirement does not apply. If you would like a copy of the committee sign-up sheet, check the blog, or the SUU Writing Center’s Google Documents account, or please ask.

  • Obtain four  points  in the Professional Development Activities category OR complete four activities in the same category.  Please note: these activities are based on a point system; the larger the project the higher the points, and vice versa. Higher point projects could be creating an ESL program, creating an innovative way to give class orientations, etc. Smaller point projects could be writing a tip sheet, doing blog entries, etc. See Director for point amounts per each project. Moreover, your are encouraged to be creative and to complete larger projects for more points.

  • Observe another tutor, especially a tutor who has not yet reached Expert level of certification, and critique him/her. During this observation be sure NOT to interrupt the session, but take detailed notes, and give creative criticism that highlights both the other tutor’s effective and not as effective techniques.  Write a ½ page on how you could implement the tutor’s effective techniques in your own sessions.

  • Create 1 grammar activity and post to blog. Steps to do this include: creating a poll, giving answers after the poll has been answered, and posting a response on why this grammar topic is important as well as giving tutors further information on the selected subject. Please contact Blog Administrator for further details.

Post-Certification: 50 cent an hour, repeatable for two semesters.

  • Complete four major (worth 2 points or more) professional development activities above expert certification. Please take a LEADERSHIP ROLE in at least one of them. A leadership role might involve creating and presenting an ESL program, creating an innovative way to give class orientations, serving a chair for the Scriblerian, organizing a workshop for tutors or students, etc. Attach a short summary detailing what each project was in your binder, including any materials you developed. Make sure to attend the majority of meetings for committees you signed up for as well as completing goals and fulfilling the tasks given.( If you did not sign up for a committee than this requirement does not apply. If you would like a copy of the committee sign-up sheet, check the blog, or the SUU Writing Center’s Google Documents account, or please ask.)
