Creative Writing/Creative Teaching Conference

Southern Utah University Professional Development Course

This is an online class with IVC sessions on Thursdays, Aug. 30, Sept. 6, Sept. 13, Sept. 27, Oct. 11, Oct. 25, and Nov. 29 (7 Thursdays) from 5:30 PM to 7:30 PM. IVC sessions are delivered to SLCC, DSC, Springville High School, Snow Richfield and SUU. Please contact Karl Stevens at stevens@suu.edu ONLY if you need an alternate site scheduled.

ENGL 5530: Creative Writing and the Utah Core Standards

Fall Semester, 2012, 3 credits
Instructors: Dr. Danielle Beazer Dubrasky and Professor Toa Tawa

  • Study the theory and practice of creative writing pedagogy to develop an understanding of how to teach the writing standards of the Utah Core Standards for grades 9-12.
  • Review poetry and prose techniques used by contemporary writers that relate to the writing standards of the Utah Core Standards.
  • Develop teaching strategies for the Shakespeare play Hamlet.
  • Create an education unit incorporating the Utah Core Standards
  • Attend the Creative Writing/Creative Teaching Conference, Sept. 21-22, at Southern Utah University, which will include creative writing workshops by featured writers and round-table discussions.
  • Attend pedagogy workshops led by education specialists Christelle Estrada and Terry Krieger-James at the conference
  • Attend Utah Shakespeare Festival’s Les Miserable's. Discount tickets to Hamlet for course participants will also be available.

The course fee of $145 includes registration for the credits as well as for the Creative Writing/Creative Teaching Conference at Southern Utah University.

Dr. Danielle Beazer Dubrasky is an associate professor of English at SUU and an award-winning poet with over 20 years of experience teaching creative writing. Professor Toa Tawa has several years experience teaching in secondary education and currently teaches pedagogy courses in the SUU English Department.
