Welcome to the Department of History and Sociology at Southern Utah University. We anticipate that a minor degree will be offered in Anthropology in a short time, directed by Dr. Emily Dean (Ph. D, Berkeley). We have nine full-time faculty members, all with doctoral degrees from highly-regarded universities, and two qualified adjuncts teaching courses this Fall 2008. This fall we also welcome Dr. Randle Hart (Ph.D, University of Toronto, 2007) to our department; he will be teaching courses in Sociology, among them Race and Ethnic Relations (SOC 2630) and Social Theory (SOC 4780). Our faculty are active scholars with published books, journal articles, and conference presentations to their credit. Our students in History, Sociology, and the Social Sciences Composite Major pursue a variety of professional endeavors that include teaching, practicing law, and doing social work. We sponsor two honors societies (Phi Alpha Theta in History and Alpha Kappa Delta in Sociology) that reward high academic achievement and foster campus and community involvement. Our department promotes rigorous academic standards, respect for academic freedom and for all human beings, and responsibility as global citizens.
