Department Chair

Welcome to the Department of History and Sociology at Southern Utah University. We are very pleased to add the discipline of Anthropology to our department.  Dr. Emily Dean (Ph. D, Berkeley) will begin teaching Anthropology courses this Fall 2006.  We have seven full-time faculty members, all with doctoral degrees from highly-regarded universities, and four qualified adjuncts teaching courses this Fall.  In addition to Dr. Dean, Dr. Mark Miller (Ph. D, University of Arizona) has been added to our department.  Prof. Miller will be teaching courses in American History, including the History of Utah.  Our faculty are active scholars with published books, journal articles, and conference presentations to their credit.  Our students in History, Sociology, and the Social Sciences Composite Major pursue a variety of professional endeavors that include teaching, practicing law, and doing social work. We sponsor two honors societies (Phi Alpha Theta in History and Alpha Kappa Delta in Sociology) that reward high academic achievement and foster campus and community involvement. Our department promotes high academic standards, respect for academic freedom and for all human beings, and a life-long love of learning.
