Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Should I apply if I don't meet and/or exceed all of the published criteria?
Absolutely YES! The MPA Admissions Committee is meticulous when reviewing full application packages. Each applicant is considered based on the combination of all the material submitted rather than on bits and pieces.
What is the most important part of the application?
Applicants are considered based on the picture painted by all the parts of the application process, so each component is equally important.
I see that you accept the GRE, GMAT and/or LSAT. Is one test better than another?
Each applicant should take the test which best meets their own qualifications. More information on each test can be found on the web; simply type the test name into any search engine to find the web sites.
How long does it take to complete the program?
The 36-credit-hour program is designed to be completed in two years (four semesters). Nine (9) credit hours/semester is considered full-time at the graduate level.
Can I complete the program faster by taking courses in the summer?
MPA classes are not taught during the summer semester. However, many students will work on a thesis (PADM 6900), an internship (PADM 6890) or a readings & conference (PADM 6830) over the summer. Although 9 credits is considered full-time, students may take more than 9 credits per semester, enabling completion of the program in three semesters instead of four.
How long can I take to complete the MPA?
You can take up to four years to complete the program without having to change catalogs.
I work full-time. Are classes offered on-line?
None of the classes are currently offered on-line. The majority of MPA students are full-time employees. To accommodate this, all classes meet only once a week and no class begins before 4:00 PM.
This sounds like a great program, but I just don't want to commute to the SUU campus to take classes.
Not a problem! Each MPA class is taught via Ed-Net once every two years. Currently, all Ed-Net classes are broadcast to Dixie State College (St. George, UT). Other locations may be added contingent on student interest.
In what order should I take the classes required to complete the MPA?
There is no hard and fast rule to answer this question. Typically, students will take PADM 6000 Administrative Theory at the beginning of the program, and will take PADM 6990 Capstone in Public Administration at the end. Students are encouraged to shape their degree path to suit their ambitions and needs.
