These courses provide opportunities for Southern Utah University students to put into practice the theory that they are learning in the classroom. They allow students to interact with people, cultures, social classes and environments that are often quite different from their own. They provide excellent training to the benefit of both students and those whom they serve.
By going into functioning programs, rather than remaining in an on-campus classroom, students may expose themselves to greater risks; for example, liability, accidents, abuse from clients or personal stress. Some, but not all, host agencies include SUU students with their employee insurance. Southern Utah University does not assume liability for students in off-campus placements. As part of consideration of whether to participate in a course like this, each student should evaluate risks and insurance coverage at the placement site of his/her choice.
Given the supervision and limited case loads, SUU students are rarely exposed to even as much risk of harm as ordinary human service workers. Nevertheless, the potential is present. Students, therefore, should exercise reasonable caution and provide their own insurance, as needed.
Students are also expected to conduct themselves according to the host agency's policies and procedures manual and according to the training which they receive so as to further reduce risk of harm.
The intent of the practicum/internship courses is to provide academic credit to SUU students who wish to gain educationally meaningful field experiences. The student, as a legal adult, assumes primary responsibility for the consequences of his/her conduct, for accidents, and for other harm or injury that may occur, recognizing that this learning format is more active and involved than the traditional classroom setting.
“By signing below I affirm that I have read this statement and that I have had my questions regarding risk and liability answered. I also agree to personally assume those risks, known and unknown, and to hold Southern Utah University, its faculty and administrators, and the host agencies, harmless from any liability, claim, or harm in any way that is associated with these courses.”
