Practicum And Internship Placements As Of March 31, 2005

This list of agencies serves as a reference. Additional placements besides those shown here may be acceptible. Programs are in the Cedar City area except as noted. Do not contact any agency directly regarding a placement without first talking with John Ault or Ruth Sessions. Both can be reached at Southern Utah University Psychology Department.

1.  CHILDREN

CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) works with abused, neglected or abandoned children (birth through 17) and making recommendations to the juvenile court.

Family Support Center of Southwestern Utah provides services to dysfunctional families and shelter for abused children.

Head Start prepares pre-school children for school.

2.  YOUTH CORRECTIONS

Cross Creek Manor (LaVerkin, Utah) works with adolescent girls in a residential facility.

Fifth District Juvenile Court (Cedar City and St. George offices) offers virtually all aspects of juvenile probation work.

Iron County Youth Center is a program that serves truant, run-away, and other youth who need temporary shelter.

Raindancer Youth Services provides residential services for Native American (usually Navajo) youth ages 14 to 17.

Turnabout Ranch (Escalante) works with troubled teens in a working Western Ranch setting. Scholarship available.

Utah State Department of Human Services, Division of Youth Corrections, Southwest Utah Youth Center - Detention provides custodial care for youth awaiting court adjudication.

Utah State Department of Human Services, Division of Youth Services, Southwest Utah Youth Center - Long Term Placement provides individual and group therapy with adjudicated youth who are serving sentences at the facility.

Utah State Department of Human Services, Division of Youth Corrections, Youth Crisis Center (Washington County) provides custodial care for youth awaiting court adjudication.

Youth and Families with Promise connects SUU students with youth who already have engaged in minor delinquent behavior or who are considered likely to enter the juvenile justice system - an early intervention program.

3.  DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES

Chrysalis serves developmentally or behaviorally disabled adult men in residential settings.

Danville Services Corporation teaches job readiness skills to mentally handicapped adults.

Deseret Industries (Cedar City and St. George) provides job training for people with disabilities.

Turn Community Services offers residential and day treatment services to developmentally disabled persons.

4.  DRUG AND ALCOHOL

Horizon House serves adults with drug and alcohol addictions and their families.

5.  HEALTH AND MEDICAL SERVICES

Kolob Regional Care and Rehabilitation Center
  Supportive counseling with patients in the nursing home setting.

Dixie Regional Medical Center (St. George)
  A) Social Services Department; Placement offers wide range of social work/counseling type experiences as related  to a medical  setting.
  B) Home Health; Assists patients and families who are coping with in home social needs that are related to a  current illness.
  C) Hospice; Involves working with terminally ill patients and their families in a home setting.

Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Department (Cedar City) 
   Placement involves assisting the physical therapist with psychological factors among patients.

St. George Care Center (St. George)
   Nursing home setting serving convalescing and chronically ill.

Valley View Medical Center (Cedar City)
  A) Social Services Department; Placement offers wide range of social work/counseling type experiences as related to a medical setting.
  B) Physical Therapy Department; placement involves assisting the physical therapist with psychological factors among patients.

6.INDUSTRIAL/ORGANIZATIONAL

Economic Development Department for Cedar City/Iron County
  Placement involves working on future Cedar City area development projects; (industrial psychology type work).  

7. MENTAL HEALTH

Central Utah Mental Health/Alcohol and Drug Center (Delta, Utah)
 Placement parallels Southwest Utah Mental Health/Alcohol and Drug Center; i.e. wide range of state provided  mental health services.

Intermountain Special Abuse Treatment Center (ISAT)
 Involves serving as a co-therapist in group therapy for sex offenders at the adult prison, offenders living in the  community, and victims of sex abuse.

LDS Family Services
 Placement offers a limited range of social service experience such as counseling, family intervention, and  adoptions; summer placements especially difficult

Southwest Center (Mental Health)
A) Clinical/Counseling Services:
 Adult counseling, case management and family support services.
B) Prevention Services Program:
 Placement involves preventative education work regarding alcohol and drug abuse in schools, community groups  and agencies.
C) Oasis House Adult Specialty Services:
 Involves working with mental health patients in day programs.
D) Eagle Quest Youth Specialty Services Program:
 Wide range of counseling/therapy/skills development program for youth.
E) Horizon House:
 Well structured adult drug/alcohol addiction program.
F) Mountain View Group
 Home for Mentally Ill: Involves working with clients in a community setting.
G) Early Family Intervention Program
 Work with abused, neglected or abandoned children.

Southwest Center (Mental Health) (St. George)
A) Youth Specialty Services Program
 Work with youth by providing skill training and counseling .
B) Independence House
 Involves working with mental health patients in day programs.
C) Drug Rehabilitation and Prevention
 Involves working with alcohol and drug prevention and rehabilitation program.

8. NATIVE AMERICAN

Paiute Indian Tribe Social Services Department
 Wide range of opportunities providing direct interventions, education and services to children, youth and adults.

 Iron County Schools Special Education & Early Childhood Intervention; Placement involves working with special needs children.

 Usual range of opportunities to work with children of K-5 age range; special education program.

 Placement involves working in the guidance office doing personal and/or academic counseling with Cedar High
 students.
VII. Canyon View High School Guidance Department
 Placement involves working with guidance counselor and students.
VIII. School Psychology
 Placement involves participation in psychological testing, teacher consultation, student and family counseling,  diagnostic testing, collection of observational data.
IX. Special Education Programs:
A) Pre-School Program
 Placement offers wide range of service opportunities with severely disabled children.
B) Speech and Language Program
 Opportunity to participate in offering speech & language services.
C) Youth In Custody & At Risk Youth Program, Middle School
  Program serves adjudicated youth in custody of the courts.
D) Youth In Custody & At Risk Youth Program, Cedar High School
  Program serves adjudicated youth in custody of the courts.

10. SHELTERS AND CRISIS CARE

Canyon Creek Women's Shelter
 Assisting women and children of domestic abuse/violence in a shelter setting.

Dove Center Women's Shelter (St. George)
 Assisting women and children of domestic abuse/violence in a shelter setting.

Family Support Center of Southwestern Utah
 Placement involves working with dysfunctional children and families.

Iron County Care and Share Shelter
 Placement involves supervising the shelter and doing wide range of custodial services. Little clinical work, but opportunity to interact with transients.

Iron County Youth Center
 
This program serves truant, run-away, and other youth who need temporary shelter.

Victim Advocate Services
 Wide range of opportunities to assist victims of crime.

11. SOUTHERN UTAH UNIVERSITY

A) Athletic Department
 Placement involves sports psychology applications.
B) Psychology Department
 Placement involves working as a research assistant, organizing projects for Psi Chi, peer assistance or wide range of other options.
C) Student Support Services
D) Student Development Center
 Personal, academic and career counseling for SUU students.
E) Turning Point Program
 Program serves displaced homemakers/non-traditional students.
F) Upward Bound Program
 Placement involves program development, workshop presentations & direct counseling with economically or academically disadvantaged students; greatest need is in spring and summer.
G) Wellness Center
 Placement offers: a) SUU student substance abuse offenders classes and groups; b) Peer counseling on an  outreach basis for SUU students; wide range of opportunities

II. Division of Child and Family Services
 Placement involves direct work with child abuse families, case management and counseling of foster children.
III. Children's Protective Services
 Students accompany social worker on home investigations of suspected  child abuse; counseling with families &  victims of abuse.
IV. Youth Services
 Crisis intervention, counseling, parent education & youth advocacy.

Utah State Department of Human Services (Kanab, Utah)
 Placement involves aid to families work.

  Placement offers wide range of opportunities.

  Residential treatment program for male/female youth, ages 12-18.

  Wilderness Program

Sorensen's Ranch (Koosharem, Utah)
  Placement involves working with troubled teens. Set in a real life, working Western Ranch. Concentration is on developing life skills. Scholarship available.

Triumph Youth Services (Toquerville, Utah)
  Residential program for male youth offenders.

Turnabout Ranch (Escalante)
