Psychology 4800: Advanced Practicum

Practicum should be a six-credit course, three credits for the academic work and three credits for 120 field placement service hours. A single, six-credit course, however, often presents problems for both students and administration. Advanced Practicum provides the means for students to receive the additional three credits with minimal additional work.

The academic requirements for Advanced Practicum are:
1. Successful completion of Psychology 3800, Practicum;
2. 120 hours in a placement site, 30 hours beyond those required for Practicum;
3. An update paper, for those who did not complete 120 hours prior to writing the Practicum papers.

The Advanced Practicum course does not include formal classroom hours. There is also no exam. Students need only meet with the course instructor at the beginning of the course, to clear the intended placement, and again at the end, to review the experience. Regular contact during the course, however, is welcome.

Students who responsibly fulfill the 120-clock-hour requirement and write an acceptable update paper receive the same grade for Advanced Practicum that they earned in Practicum. Students wishing to receive a higher grade are welcome to do, or redo, any of the Practicum requirements.

All other expectations and conditions, as contained in the Practicum syllabus, apply equally to Advanced Practicum. For example, students should continue with proper documentation of their activities. They also need to continue to respect agency standards, maintain professional conduct, and keep proper confidentiality.
